Sex, STD's & Students
Chicago Tribune, Section 13, Page 4, July 25, 1999
Though only about nine percent of the television fair
students watch suggests that there are risks associated with unmarried
sex, reality is a bit, well, more real.
Today one in ten adolescent girls are
infected with Chlamydia,
and the spread of Gonorrhea,
down among adults, is rising among teens.
In fact, every ten seconds an American teenager contracts
a sexually transmitted disease and
one-fourth of all people with HIV were infected as teenagers.
Additionally, it is worth noting that, according to the American Social Health Association's annual report, nearly
40% of teenagers in this country have had sex by 9th grade, and 70 percent have had sex by 12th grade. Of the latter group, 27 percent have had four
or more partners.
