Niece of Martin Luther King Is Pro-Life Advocate

BOSTON All people, regardless of faith, need to protect the rights of the unborn, Alveda King, a pro-life advocate, told a crowd of more than 300 at Faneuil Hall at Boston University.

King, the niece of slain civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., said protecting the rights of the unborn is part of her uncle's dream for freedom. Her own father, civil rights leader A. D. King, was assassinated in 1969--a year after his brother.

"What would Martin Luther King say if he saw the skulls of babies at the bottom of abortion pits?" King asked. "If Martin Luther King's dream is to live, our babies must live."

King called for all assembled to take a leadership position on the issue of abortion, regardless of faith. Despite her call for action, King is opposed to violent and forceful measures, including the bombing of abortion facilities. "Anyone who values life will not take it for any reason," King said. "We are not in the business of taking life."

King addressed the issue of partial birth abortions, which she considers one of the most heinous crimes against the unborn.

"We have been fueled by the fires of women's rights," she said. "What about the rights of the baby who is artificially breached? We can't sit idly by and allow legal murder. With today's technology, there is no excuse for taking the life of an unborn."

According to King, the fight to protect an unborn baby is not new. She pointed to the Bible for examples, which included the lives of Moses and Jesus, who were threatened before they were even born.

King advocates adoption as a solution to unwanted pregnancies, and believes ministering to the "moms and dads" before they assume the role of parents is a positive step toward stronger families. "We're sending mixed signals to our children by allowing promiscuous sex," she said. King feels that by choosing life, people will realize her uncle's dream.

"How can the dream survive if we destroy the children?" King asked. "Life was very precious to my uncle and life today is precious. This is the season we celebrate the contributions of Martin Luther King and how he lived a life of love and gratitude. This is the day to choose life."
