NEW HOPE FOR BAN ON PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION

The Bush Presidency raises new hopes for a ban on Partial Birth Abortion. This most gruesome method of abortion is hardly distinguishable from infanticide and takes the lives of hundreds of babies every year.

Twice in the recent past the Partial Birth Abortion bill has passed with wide majorities in both the House and the Senate, only to be vetoed by President Clinton. President Bush has firmly stated his intention to sign a ban on this grim practice as soon as the bill arrives on his desk.

It cannot happen too soon. There is growing evidence that the practice is rapidly becoming more and more common as abortionists compete for business in a shrinking market.

As a result of abstinence education efforts and other pro-life educational work, demand for abortions has shrunk by 17.4% nationwide in the last seven years, which has left abortionists scrambling for a competitive edge. For many abortionists that niche is the third trimester abortion.

According to The New York Times, which recently reported in depth on this dirty little secret of the abortion industry, some doctors find this medical procedure "exquisitely attractive." It can net several hundred thousand dollars a year (mostly cash) for part-time work, and it remains one of the few unmanaged care areas in medicine.

Dr. Warren Hern, owner of the Boulder Abortion Clinic in Colorado, began marketing and performing late-term abortions when he had trouble competing with Planned Parenthood and their giant tax-payer subsidies. "Twenty years ago," Hern said, "there were just two or three doctors in the country doing late-term abortions." But during a recent medical meeting, Hern attended the session on late-term abortions and was "startled" to find a crowd. "In fact," he said, "a very large room was filled--packed." The Times article goes on to report that "the competition for patients is absolutely ruthless."

As more and more doctors learn these procedures, the need for Congress to act becomes ever more urgent. A ban on partial birth abortion is the first step in protecting both mothers and babies from these unscrupulous marketers of death.

Since both the Senate and the House remain solidly pro-life, we can reasonably expect speedy passage of a bill. Thank God, we now have a president that will sign it.
