Adoption instead of Abortion

Alison is fresh-faced and bubbly. The children in the classroom respond to her immediately. As many of our speakers do, Alison begins her presentation with a story. She tells of a young girl, fresh out of high school and attending her first year of college. Confronted by a problem pregnancy, too afraid and too ashamed to tell her family, she undergoes an abortion. For years following the abortion, she tries to escape her growing feelings of guilt and depression through drugs, alcohol, and even an attempt at suicide.

Then Alison tells of a second girl, a few years older than the first. One day, this girl also finds herself in the dilemma of a problem pregnancy, but instead of aborting, she chooses life. As difficult and painful as the decision is, the second girl opts to give her baby to a childless couple in an open adoption. She becomes a good friend of this couple, and loves the child as the child grows to love her in return. She joins in all the family events, Christmas, Easter and birthdays. It is painful knowing that this child is hers and yet not hers, but it is a sweet suffering.

Alison pauses here and looks intently at her students. "Can you guess which story is about me?" she asks. The children guess, but you see, it is a trick question. It is not two separate women, but one and the same. Both girls are Alison herself.

To this day, and every day, Alison continues to feel the pain of the abortion. To this day, her relationships with men are difficult. To this day, she cannot vacuum her own apartment because that sound brings back the sound of the abortion suction machine.

But when she closes her eyes, she can hear the laughter of her daughter, the daughter who does not yet understand that Alison is her birth mother, but who loves this family friend with her whole heart. Alison hears her daughter saying her name; and there is peace in Alison's heart.

Like all of us at Texans United for Life, Alison never wants another woman to have to live her life through the trauma of abortion. That is why she and all of our teaching staff are in public and private schools, teaching the facts about abortion, but also the facts about the precious gift called life. We are devoted to enriching the lives of young people by giving them the tools they need to say "no" to the sexual pressures they confront on a daily basis. Adoption is an incredible positive solution to the tough problem of a crisis pregnancy.
